Beyond serving as your local utility provider, New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E) are committed to partnering with local businesses to help build a strong and healthy economy in the communities we serve. Our Economic Development team offers a variety of programs to support new and existing businesses as well as attract new businesses to our region.

To help you learn more about our economic development efforts, we’re launching a blog series to showcase our programs, partnerships and impact. In this feature, we’ll examine our Economic Development Program and the opportunities we have for current and prospective customers.

NYSEG and RG&E have a long history of providing support to our communities. Our Economic Development Program was formalized in the early 2000s as a way to further provide assistance to customers and help our region remain competitive. Our goal is to be a catalyst to increase capital investment, create jobs and build economic vitality. This includes creating better career opportunities for our customers, supporting local start-ups, creating equity-based development and workforce opportunities, working with local manufacturers to address key growth-based plans, and more.

“NYSEG and RG&E are proud to be part of Upstate New York’s resurgence,” said Joe Rizzo, Manager of Economic Development at NYSEG and RG&E. “Our region has so much to offer. We serve as a strategic partner to help our communities build strong, healthy economies—especially as we seek to build back better after the economic and social impacts of COVID-19. We’re committed to helping unlock New York’s economic potential by leveraging our economic development programs in collaboration with local, regional and state partners to support new entrepreneurs, regional investments and ultimately, job growth.”

NYSEG and RG&E offer more than 10 economic development programs that provide support in a variety of ways—from electric infrastructure upgrades for redevelopment projects to productivity and growth initiatives. Since 2010, NYSEG and RG&E have provided more than $107 million in economic development assistance to support over 800 projects, leveraging more than $5 billion in private sector and capital investments in New York state.

This year, the companies will also launch two new electric economic development programs targeted to assist both small and large businesses that have been impacted by COVID-19. A $2 million annual Small Business Customer Program and a $4 million annual Large Business Customer program will be established as part of the three-year joint proposal agreement approved by the NY Public Service Commission and accepted by NYSEG and RG&E last November. The programs are expected to launch later this year.

“It’s crucial that our Economic Development Program is always evolving and expanding,” Rizzo said. “Our region is filled will all types of businesses—large and small, manufacturers and startups. We strive to offer support for them all in a way that is effortless for our partners.”

Up next in our Economic Development Blog Series, we’ll learn more about our Manufacturing Accelerator Program, which helps local manufacturing companies make their business stronger through growth and productivity-based initiatives.
