In Celebration of Black History Month: Meet Annmarie Brown

At AVANGRID, Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace matters to us. We strive to build and sustain a diverse workforce with a rich mix of differences, inclusive workplaces where each of us feel valued and connected, and equitable opportunities to grow and develop ā€“ no matter where we work. As we celebrates Black History Month this month, weā€™re spotlighting employees who are members of The AVANGRID African-American Council for Excellence (AAACE). Letā€™s meet Annmarie Brown, Lead Billing Representative, Southern Connecticut Gas.

Tell us about your role at AVANGRID and how long you have worked here.

I have been with AVANGRID for twelve years and throughout those years I have taken on many roles. Starting with the traditional customer service role, I then took on a leadership role which included working with new employees, becoming a grievance representative for the union, local 12000-1, and so much more! I am currently the lead representative for the billing department at Southern Connecticut Gas.

What is your favorite part of your role?

My favorite role within my job is being a team player along with a team leader! Being able to work and grow alongside my colleagues is motivational as well as inspirational. A leader is someone who is able to be an uplifting example while also getting down and working alongside those who need the help. “A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.” ā€”Lao Tzu

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month means the freedom to revisit my ancestors and their great contributions, including what they’ve done for the world. It also means we need to come together as a great nation to support and love each other and treat each other with respect and kindness. Black History Month is a special time to recognize all the inventions, achievements, and unique talents seen throughout time and those yet to come.

What do you like to do in your free time?

My free time consists of a variety of things! I enjoy spending time with my family on the weekends and during the holidays. Going out to new restaurantsĀ with my girlfriendsĀ and baking traditionalĀ JamaicanĀ cakes keeps me well rounded and up to date with the culinary world. Lastly, in my free time I really enjoy traveling! I have family in England, Germany, and even the Philippines! Being able to go away and relax on a warm beach is the cherry on the cake.

How long have you been a member of AAACE and what have you gained from being a member of this Business Resource Group?

I have been a member of AAACE for two years and what I enjoy the most is the fact that we work to uplift each other within the company while gaining recognition as a Black group. I like the fact that we bring in Black influencers to come in and speak to our employees about Black excellence.

How does AVANGRIDā€™s commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) motivate you?

When businesses prioritize DEI, it encourages a more innovative and positive environment, which in return creates a more profitable company along with a more diverse atmosphere for new employees.
