Frank Reynolds Celebrates 30th Work Anniversary

When we think of a great leader, we often envision someone who is positive, creative, intelligent, innovative, and respectful. However, a truly exceptional leader is always learning, listening, and striving to be the best version of themselves. We are fortunate to have such a leader, Frank Reynolds, right here in our organization. As the President and CEO of UI, SCG, and CNG, and the Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Gas Company, Frank consistently goes above and beyond for his team, fostering collaboration and inviting everyone to have a seat at the table to share their ideas and voice their opinions. His leadership qualities inspire confidence and trust, making him a role model for all of us.

This past week, Frank celebrated his 30th work anniversary with the organization. He began his career with Southern Connecticut Gas in 1994 as part of a rotational program for new engineers. Frank progressed to the position of Director of Business Development & Assistant to Chairman of the Board. He held various roles with Avangrid, including serving as the head of General Services. In October 2020, he assumed the role of President and CEO of UIL Holdings Corporation, where he oversees four natural gas and electric subsidiary companies in Connecticut and Massachusetts: United Illuminating (UI), Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG), Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG), and Berkshire Gas Company (BGC).

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years,” said Frank. “When I started at SCG, I had no idea I would be in the position I am in today. I’ve met many talented and knowledgeable individuals who have helped mentor me throughout my career, shaping me into the leader I am today. I wouldn’t change a thing about my career. This company has provided for my family, allowed me to challenge myself, and allowed me to accomplish tasks I never thought I could do. I thank everyone who has had a hand in my career.”

Today, Frank is responsible for ensuring that UIL companies perform well operationally and financially and successfully meet their core obligation to provide safe, reliable services to customers equitably and at a reasonable cost. He is also passionate about pursuing projects focused on improving customer connections and investing in new technologies, such as electric vehicles or green hydrogen, to help Connecticut and Massachusetts meet their clean energy goals.

“I am fortunate to have an exceptional team supporting me. They are passionate and dedicated to their roles,” said Frank. “I can honestly say that I am surrounded by a very sharp team — they always say that’s what you want as a leader. Beyond being smart, it’s clear that they enjoy their work. We’ve encountered numerous challenges over the years, but they rise to the occasion each and every time. They have a great attitude, are very positive, and are extremely customer-focused on all fronts.”

The influences that shaped Frank throughout his life demonstrate how he rose to his current leadership position. Frank was born in Jamaica, and his family relocated to the United States when he was four years old. He spent his formative years in the town of Bloomfield, CT. Shortly after settling into his new community, his mother passed away. He said his family built a strong bond with one another, and his father did all that he could to be a provider. Frank says this is where he was influenced by his father’s work ethic.

“My father instilled a strong work ethic in me, and it left a lasting impression,” he described. “There was a time when he had three different jobs. He worked 11 am to 7 at night at one job, then 8 am to 4 pm at another. He had a part-time job on the weekends. He was sleeping maybe four hours a night. Sometimes, it was my job to walk down the hallway to wake him up to go to work. We didn’t live in a very big house, but it was the longest walk ever for me — I knew how tired he was.”

Frank graduated from Bloomfield High School and decided to enroll in the Connecticut Army National Guard. He said he was drawn to the organization because of its mission, camaraderie, and teamwork. He served in the guard for 20 years before retiring with the rank of Major.

“My time with the Connecticut Army National Guard shaped me into the professional I am today and helped prepare me for my current role,” Frank said. “I got catapulted into leadership from day one. When I showed up for basic training, I was 17 years old, and my hair was pretty far from military standards. The drill sergeant wanted to teach me a lesson and made me a squad leader. He figured that was the hot seat. He picked some other recruits as squad leaders, too, but I was the only one to graduate as a squad leader. That really started me down the leadership track.”

While part of the military, Frank went on to earn a degree in industrial technology engineering with a focus on power transmission from Central Connecticut State University. His pursuit of knowledge didn’t stop there. He went on to complete his MBA with a concentration in Finance at the University of New Haven. Franks’ commitment to continuous learning is evident as he has also completed coursework and executive education programs at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland. His dedication to personal and professional growth serves as an inspiration to all of us to never stop learning.

Reflecting on his journey with UI, SCG, CNG, BGC, Avangrid, and Iberdrola, Frank expresses a deep sense of pride in the numerous milestones he has achieved throughout his career. His dedication and hard work have positioned him as a respected figure in the utility industry. With a forward-looking mindset, Frank remains optimistic about the industry’s future, recognizing the potential for ongoing innovation and sustainable growth.

“It has been an honor to be part of this company and to have had a front-row seat to all of its successes and growth over the past three decades,” he told us. “I truly love what I do and believe in our company’s core mission of providing safe and reliable service to our customers and the local community. I look forward to the incredible opportunities ahead of us across the organization.” to
