Inspiring the next generation at Oregon’s Gala Solar
Avangrid technicians host local students to share insights into career opportunities in the energy industry
Supporting local communities is at the heart of Avangrid’s work. That commitment was on display recently at Gala Solar in Crook County, Oregon, where Avangrid technicians welcomed a group of local high school students for a hands-on look at career opportunities in the energy sector.

- 70 MWdc
- Located near Prineville, Oregon
- 160,000 solar panels
- Capable of powering 12,000 U.S. homes
The student visit was part of a career exploration program run by Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council (COIC). During their time at the site, students learned about the wide range of roles required to build and safely operate a large solar facility.
“It’s important because a lot of youth don’t know what’s out there or what’s possible for them,” said Joe Beaton, a youth employment councilor with COIC. “Being able to have just a short time visiting a site like this, with great employees full of information, it makes it very tangible for them, it makes it a reality in their life.”
The students came prepared with thoughtful questions about everything from how solar technology works to the different ways they can get started in the industry.
“I remember when I was young and I was getting in the industry and I didn’t know what direction to take,” said AJ Quackenbush, a technician at Gala Solar. “Getting to talk to the next generation that will rise up and replace me was phenomenal. It was great to see young faces that were interested in what we do.”
Even small actions like this, spending time with a group of local students, make a big difference and demonstrate Avangrid’s investment in the growth and success of the communities it operates in.
