Engineers Powering a Brighter Future: Careers at Avangrid
Behind every reliable power line, solar panel, and substation is a team of engineers whose expertise keeps the energy moving. At Avangrid, they are the backbone of our company, designing safe and dependable systems, advancing power generation, and driving innovations that move us toward a more reliable, resilient future.
From restoring service after storms to modernizing the grid and developing data-driven solutions, our engineers make progress possible every day. Their work not only shapes the future of energy but also improves the daily lives of millions of people in the communities we serve.
A Spectrum of Engineering Roles
Engineering at Avangrid is as varied as the communities we serve. Our teams span disciplines that work together to design, maintain, and transform the energy systems of today and tomorrow.
- Electrical Engineers focus on planning and maintaining the systems that power homes and businesses.
- Civil Engineers manage critical infrastructure projects that strengthen and modernize our grid.
- Mechanical Engineers keep our energy equipment running safely and efficiently.
- Data and Analytics Engineers apply technology and predictive modeling to solve complex challenges.
- Renewable Energy Engineers design and implement solar, wind, and hydro projects that accelerate the transition to clean energy.
- Energy Efficiency Engineers help businesses and communities use less energy while achieving more.
Engineers in Action
For many of our engineers, the drive to innovate comes from personal experiences, family influences, and a shared commitment to improving the communities we serve.
For Toussaint Lohomboli, an Associate Engineer in the Local Rotational Graduate Program in Maine, the motivation began in childhood. Growing up in a country where constant electricity was more of a luxury than a guarantee, she developed a determination to help ensure that reliable power is available to all. Now working on projects such as the construction of a new substation using compact GIS technology, she sees firsthand how innovation can reduce outages, improve reliability, and modernize the grid. “With electricity being a critical necessity now more than ever, one of the most rewarding aspects of the job is knowing that the work we do keeps communities powered,” she says.
For Devon MarcAurele, Supervisor – Interconnections in New York, engineering is both professional and personal. Inspired by his mother, a nuclear engineer, he found his own passion in planning and distributed energy resources. Today, he leads interconnection studies that bring renewable projects and EV chargers onto the system, each one a step closer to achieving state decarbonization goals. “Every day in planning is critical to shaping the energy future,” Devon explains. “I love seeing the designs I recommend get built in the field and knowing they help move our communities forward.”
For David Nizzardo, an engineer and Senior Cyber Identity & Access Management (IAM) Specialist, the appeal of engineering lies in problem solving and building skills that matter. A graduate of our Engineering Development Program, he has worked on projects ranging from maintaining substation data systems to deploying new cybersecurity tools that strengthen Avangrid’s defenses. Growing up in Orange, Connecticut, David first connected with the company through internships, and today he values the chance to contribute to both daily efficiencies and long-term system resilience. “I enjoy the problem solving of everyday tasks as well as finding efficiencies to make routine tasks easier for myself and those around me,” he says.
Meanwhile, MeeNa Sazanowicz, a Lines Principal Engineer, is focused on the challenges and opportunities ahead. With the push for affordability, the rise of electric vehicles, and the need to replace aging infrastructure, she sees engineers playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of the grid. “The most rewarding part of being an engineer is finding solutions as a team to execute a project that solves a need,” she notes. “Every day is a learning experience that keeps you engaged and on your toes.”
Together, their stories reflect the heart of engineering at Avangrid: a blend of innovation, resilience, and collaboration, all in service of building a brighter and more sustainable energy future.
