Celebrating Black History Month: Meet Annmarie Brown

At Avangrid, equal opportunity in the workplace matters to us. We strive to build and sustain a diverse workforce with a rich mix of differences, inclusive workplaces where each of us feel valued and connected, and equitable opportunities to grow and develop – no matter where we work. As we celebrate Black History Month this month, we’re spotlighting employees who are members of the Avangrid African-American Council for Excellence (AAACE). Let’s meet Annmarie Brown, Lead Billing Specialist for Southern Connecticut Gas.

Tell us a little about your background and how you came to work here.

I was born and raised in Saint Catherine, Spanish Town, Jamaica, where I attended Catholic schools from primary through high school. I furthered my education at Gateway Community College, focusing on communications and business. My career in video production began with experiences in video editing, graphics, music videos, and live TV hosting, where I had the privilege of working with VV Records and Sony Records under Amoree Productions. This role allowed me to collaborate with numerous artists, conducting interviews, producing music videos, and securing airplay for their work.

As a dedicated mother of four—three boys and one girl—and a proud grandmother of three, I initially paused my career to focus on raising my children. During this time, I actively volunteered at their schools, participating in the PTA, drama club, and sports club, while also supporting my husband. Once my children became young adults, I re-entered the workforce, starting as a temp at Southern Connecticut Gas. After two years, I was fortunate to be hired permanently, and I have been with the SCG for 12 years now.

What is a particular accomplishment in your career here at Avangrid that you’re proud of?

One of my proudest accomplishments at Avangrid has been my growth and development over the years. I spent eight years in customer service, where I had the opportunity to work closely with new employees, facilitating team-building activities to foster collaboration and support. I then transitioned to the billing department, where I now serve as the Lead Billing Specialist. In this role, I have successfully managed projects and collaborated with management and colleagues to enhance our team’s performance and morale. Additionally, my involvement with AAACE has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to connect with diverse professionals across the company and learn from their experiences while fostering a culture of mutual support.

Who has had a significant influence on your life?

The most significant influence in my life has been my family. Coming from a large family with 23 aunts and uncles, I was raised in an environment filled with love and support. As the oldest of 12 siblings, I often find myself treated like the youngest, which adds a unique dynamic to our relationships. My father and grandfather instilled in us a strong work ethic and the courage to take risks, whether starting our own ventures or advancing within a company.

I recently launched my own business, and I am incredibly proud of this achievement. My dad has always encouraged me to strive for excellence, emphasizing the importance of research and thoroughness in any endeavor. He dedicated countless hours to discussing business plans, investing strategies, and trading techniques with me. His guidance has been invaluable, and he remains my hero—always available to offer his full attention and support, whether for business or personal matters.

What is a moment in Black history that influenced or shaped your life or that particularly resonates with you?

My reflections on the challenges faced as a Black woman in both education and the workplace are profound and resonate deeply. The experience of having to work twice as hard to prove one’s capabilities is a reality that many can relate to, and it highlights the systemic barriers that still exist today.

The story of the 6888th Postal Battalion is indeed inspiring. These courageous women not only served their country during World War II but also broke barriers in a predominantly male and racially segregated military. Their determination and resilience exemplify the strength of Black women throughout history, showing that despite facing discrimination and doubt, they persevered and excelled. This narrative serves as a powerful reminder of the contributions and capabilities of Black women, and it underscores the importance of recognition and appreciation in the workplace.

As we celebrate Black History Month, it’s crucial to honor these stories and continue advocating for equality and recognition in all spheres of life. Your voice and experiences contribute to this ongoing conversation, helping to pave the way for future generations to come.

What is a cherished food or tradition from your cultural background that you celebrate?

In Jamaican culture, food is a central part of our traditions and celebrations. One dish that truly embodies this spirit is ackee and saltfish. This flavorful combination is often enjoyed at any meal—breakfast, lunch, or dinner—and brings families together in a way that few other dishes can.

When paired with fried dumplings or steamed green bananas, it becomes a comforting and satisfying meal that showcases love and togetherness. Other favorites like oxtail and curry goat also grace our tables during celebrations, but ackee and saltfish holds a special place in my heart. It’s more than just food; it’s a celebration of heritage, family, and the joy of sharing delicious meals together.

Lastly, what is one thing about you that most people don’t know?

As a Capricorn, I often come across as serious and focused, dedicated to getting the job done right without taking shortcuts. Friends and family frequently seek my advice, and I’m always on the lookout for the next business adventure, whether it’s stock trading or exploring Bitcoin.

But there’s a fun-loving side to me that many might not see at first glance! I come from a loud and lively family, and I absolutely love to laugh. I enjoy standing in the rain, taking long walks on concrete (not dirt!), and snuggling up on snowy days in front of a cozy fireplace with Cheetos and soda in hand.

I cherish the company of friends and family, love throwing parties, and can’t resist dancing and singing—though you won’t find me in the church choir! One of my favorite pastimes is playing with my super bubble gun in the backyard, delighting my kids as I blow bubbles everywhere. I adore watching love stories and comedies, and I believe in the magic of love. As my grandmother wisely said, “We all can’t be princesses; someone has to bow, as I go by,” and that’s me, embracing the sweetness of life with a sprinkle of silliness!
