Celebrating Women’s History Month: Aparna Singamsetty
At Avangrid, Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace matters to us. During Women’s History Month, we honor women’s contributions to history, culture, and society. Throughout this month, we’re spotlighting some of the women on our team who make Avangrid and the world a better place. Meet Aparna Singamsetty, Electrical Design Manager.
Tell us about your life before Avangrid. What’s your career journey been like? Your education?
I worked in the utility sector for more than a decade before joining Avangrid in 2022. It has been a rewarding career journey to date for me; and continues to be at Avangrid. I have met several knowledgeable engineers at every job, who helped me find my footing in the power industry.
I have a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering from Bangalore University in India followed by a master’s degree from our very own Tufts University in Massachusetts.
Now, your life at Avangrid: What are your main responsibilities in your role, and what is your favorite part of the work you do?
At Avangrid, I work as the electrical design manager responsible for the offshore wind plants’ electrical design and grid interconnections.
My favorite part of work at Avangrid is interacting and learning from my extraordinarily brilliant and kind colleagues.
What are your passions, hobbies, favorite pastimes?
I am passionate about encouraging young engineers to join the energy industry. I actively participate in outreach efforts undertaken by my alma mater, Tufts University. I also happen to coach my son’s robotics team to participate in FIRST Lego League Robotics competitions.
I like to sew; pillowcase sewing is the most therapeutic activity in my opinion. I enjoy cooking for my family, hiking with them and lately I’m really enjoying learning boxing.
Who’s a woman who inspires you? Why?
There are several famous women who inspire me such as Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Michelle Obama, Sheryl Sandberg, Janet Yellen, Kamala Harris etc. However, I would like to mention that I find career stories of women engineers in the previous generation the most inspiring. They collectively paved the way for me and all the woman engineers to come.
What advice would you give to a young woman looking to follow in your footsteps?
The energy industry has a vast number of opportunities, not just for engineers. I recommend young women network immensely through alumni connections, industry expos, and career societies in addition to exploring rotation programs and early career opportunities to find the best fit. Seek out mentors at your current jobs to learn from them.
