Celebrating Black History Month: Meet David Phillips

At Avangrid, Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace matters to us. We strive to build and sustain a diverse workforce with a rich mix of differences, inclusive workplaces where each of us feel valued and connected, and equitable opportunities to grow and develop – no matter where we work. As we celebrate Black History Month this month, we’re spotlighting employees who are members of The Avangrid African-American Council for Excellence (AAACE). Let’s meet David Phillips.

What is your role at Avangrid and how did you find your way here?

I am currently a Customer Service Technical Trainer for Central Maine Power. I found my way to the training role with Central Maine Power while working as a trainer for one of our vendor companies. After collaboration with members of the internal customer service and training teams, I was excited when an opportunity opened in the company and made the move from Houston, TX to Augusta, ME in August 2022.

How do you celebrate Black History Month?

I celebrate Black History daily. I’m proud of my roots and all that we have accomplished and overcome as a people. In the face of adversity, I’m reminded of the struggles of our ancestors, and strive to honor them by maintaining a strong mind and understanding the biggest obstacles we face are from the limitations we place on ourselves. I enjoy participating in Black History events scheduled throughout the month of February with my church community in Everett, MA. This is my first year celebrating with them, but I’m looking forward to the opportunities to represent our culture in a positive light and engage with our community. I look for Black-owned businesses to support not only during February but year-round.

What is your favorite piece of media or art from a Black creator?

To be honest, there’s too much brilliance to narrow it down to one favorite. As a people, we have had so many outstanding creations and accomplishments. We don’t create culture, we ARE the culture. We are a movement. I can’t narrow it down to one, but I adore anything Ms. Ella Fitzgerald has had her name attached to.

What do you like to do outside of work? Favorite hobby or passion?

Outside of work, I thoroughly enjoy all things performing arts. Making music, writing music, singing, dance, acting. I come from a musically inclined family. I’ve been active in the arts since I could walk and talk. I was graced with the opportunity to sing background for Grammy Award-winning artist, Le’Andria Johnson in March of 2022! Oh, and always… Go Celtics!

Who or what inspires you?

There are countless names I could put here, but ultimately, my mother, and my desire to maximize on the potential of my life. I’ve watched my mother face adversities and struggles that would make the ordinary person crumble. But the strength and resilience she always finds never cease to amaze me. In addition, I owe it to myself to push through and keep going even when the odds tell me I shouldn’t. If we only aim for what we can see, how can we ever rise above the box we were designed to look inside of?
