I’ve always been fascinated by the potential of engineering to solve complex problems and drive innovation. Additionally, the idea of contributing to advances in technology and improving people’s lives through engineering initiatives pushed me to pursue this career.

What drew you to the utilities industry over other engineering fields?

After gaining experience in various engineering sectors such as industrial and generation, I found myself gravitating towards the utilities industry due to its direct impact on communities. Working in utilities allows me to contribute to providing essential services like electricity to people’s homes and businesses. Knowing that my work directly improves the quality of life for others is incredibly fulfilling and meaningful to me.

How do you see technology and innovation impacting the future of engineering and society as a whole?

In the near-term technology and innovation will play a transformative role in shaping the future of engineering and society. In the utilities sector, advancements such as AI, IoT, and renewable energy technologies are revolutionizing how we produce, distribute, and consume energy. These innovations not only enhance efficiency and reliability but also contribute to sustainability goals, ultimately improving the quality of life for people around the world.

What is unique, special, or interesting about your job?

Working on customer-funded projects places me at the intersection of sustainability, innovation, and engineering, which provides unique opportunity to drive positive change. The dynamic nature of the work, coupled with the opportunity to collaborate with experts across different disciplines, makes every project exciting and rewarding.

What advice do you have for high school and college students interested in pursuing a career in engineering?

My advice to students interested in engineering is to focus on areas that align with their passions and interests, whether it’s civil, mechanical, electrical, or another field. Seek out opportunities to gain hands-on experience through internships, research projects, and extracurricular activities. Developing a strong foundation, coupled with a curiosity for emerging technologies and their applications in solving real-world problems, will be invaluable in pursuing a career in engineering. Lastly, don’t be afraid to challenge yourself and pursue your passions, as the rewards of a career in engineering can be immensely gratifying.
