National Engineers Week: Matthew Dellario

At Avangrid, we’re accelerating transformation for our customers and communities by pioneering a brighter energy future. By balancing decades of experience with a relentless pursuit for forward-thinking innovation, we’re creating a smarter, stronger grid, growing our energy generation system, and pursuing new solutions every day.

In honor of National Engineer’s Week, we are highlighting the brilliant minds participating in our early career Engineering Development Program (EDP), which is a two-year rotational program to prepare early-career employees to be future leaders or technical specialists within Avangrid Networks. Meet David Nizzardo, Associate Engineer.

What is your title and can you provide a brief description of your role?

I am an Associate Engineer in the Engineering Development Program (EDP). I work to develop an understanding of the functions of the various gas groups (Gas Technical Services, Gas Design & Delivery, Gas System Planning) within the company and the current state of the gas industry as a whole. I also provide support to the gas groups during each rotation by learning the roles  and responsibilities of team members and aiding in important tasks and projects.

Can you share a bit about your experience in the Engineer Rotational Program?

It is an enriching experience that allows for insight into a variety of different work styles, group cultures, and personality types while also providing an opportunity to develop a broader perspective of the company’s functions and goals as well as develop a range of technical skills beyond the scope of one particular business area.

What drew you to Avangrid?

The scope of the impact of the work Avangrid does to support, maintain, and improve its service to its customers in addition to Avangrid’s continued dedication to providing sustainable, environmentally friendly energy sources and means of delivery.

What made you pursue engineering?

An affinity for problem-solving which aligned well with skills in science and mathematics. The breadth of the industry and the applications of engineering skills beyond the field allow for limitless professional and personal growth.

Can you share an example of a project or idea you have been working on that you believe will shape the future in a positive way?

It is an essential service that most everyone cannot live without. The work you do and your contributions to the betterment of the systems affects the lives of all the customers that are served by the company. It is both a great way to apply your skills and help your neighbors and community!

What aspects of your work as an engineer do you find most rewarding and why?

Solving complex problems that result in a positive impact on the community. Nothing feels better than using your work to improve the lives of those around you!

What is unique, special, or interesting about your job?

The Engineering Development Program (EDP) provides an opportunity to take a deep dive into the roles of my peers and gain invaluable experience as a team member of all the gas groups. Additionally, being involved in a wide variety of important projects and being able to apply first-hand knowledge and skills from the different groups is both a unique and rewarding position!

What advice do you have for other early-career individuals interested in pursuing a career in engineering?

Never be afraid to ask questions or add your input. Your professional growth and contributions to your team are important and a diverse range perspectives are necessary for any team’s success.
