Harnessing the Power of Water: Hydro-Electricity and NY’s Clean Energy Transformation

Hydroelectric power plays a critical role in providing clean, reliable energy. By using the natural flow of water to generate electricity, hydro plants offer a renewable energy source that helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels. In New York State, NYSEG (New York State Electric & Gas) and RG&E (Rochester Gas & Electric) own and operate nine hydro plants that contribute to the state’s power grid. These facilities not only provide electricity but also support local communities with clean energy.

These nine hydro plants, operated by NYSEG and RG&E, represent a vital contribution to New York’s renewable energy supply. As climate change becomes an ever more pressing issue, the role of hydroelectricity—clean, sustainable, and reliable—will only grow in importance.

Get to know them!

1. Mill C Hydro-Electric Plant

Mill C Hydro-electric is operated by NYSEG and has been in operation since 1943. This plant has been a critical asset for NYSEG, harnessing the power of the Saranac River in Clinton County, NY.

2. Kents Falls Hydro-Electric Plant

Located in Clinton County, one of the older plants in the network, the Kents Falls facility has been operational since 1928. It shares the same river source as the Mill C plant.

3. Station 5 Hydro-Electric Plant

Station 5, located along the Genesee River in Rochester, has been operating since 1918. Station 5 once had the largest generators in the country.

4. Cadyville Hydro-Electric Plant

Originally constructed in 1904 and converted into a hydroelectric facility in 1921, Cadyville continues to be an integral part of NYSEG’s renewable energy network drawing power from the Saranac River.

5. High Falls Hydro-Electric Plant

Operating since 1948, High Falls distinguishes itself with over a mile of pipes carrying water from the Saranac River to its powerhouse. In 2023, it also played a role in supporting 32,400 homes with clean energy.

6. Station 2 Hydro-Electric Plant

Situated in Rochester’s historical industrial zone, Brown’s Race, Station 2 has been generating hydroelectric power since 1960. This plant is a testament to Rochester’s legacy of water-powered industry.

7. Rainbow Falls Hydro-Electric Plant

Since 1926, Rainbow Falls has been harnessing the power of the Ausable River to provide renewable energy. In 2023, it continued this tradition, contributing to the energy needs of 32,400 homes, a reflection of NYSEG’s commitment to sustainable power generation.

8. Station 26 Hydro-Electric Plant

Operating since 1952, Station 26 has been a pivotal part of Rochester’s renewable energy infrastructure. Like other plants on the Genesee River, it capitalizes on the city’s long history of utilizing water power, from the days of flour mills to modern hydroelectricity.

9. Mechanville Hydro-Electric Plant

Although a relative newcomer, having started operations in 1983, the Mechanicville hydro plant continues the tradition of harnessing the Hudson River for power generation.
