EMPOWERED: Powering communities through American energy generation

At Avangrid, we’re generating more than 10 gigawatts of energy across 21 states—from Oregon and Washington to Ohio, Illinois, New Mexico, and more—providing reliable power to be used by homes and businesses. But our work goes beyond providing energy—we are committed to driving economic growth in the communities where we operate. Through our energy generation projects, we generate significant tax revenue, create jobs, and support local economies, making a lasting impact on the places we serve.

Driving Economic Growth

Rural communities like Bickelton, Washington are beneficiaries of jobs and tax revenue, supporting local initiatives.

Economic opportunities can be limited in many rural communities. However, our energy generation projects have helped revitalize these areas, bringing much-needed investment and financial stability.

In Sherman County, Oregon, for example, our energy development has sparked the local economy and helped the community grow once again.

“Since these energy projects and investments arrived, we’ve seen our population grow by at least 10%. This has created new economic opportunities in a region that previously had very few options,” said Mike McArthur, a community advocate in Sherman County.

Our projects contribute millions in tax revenue to local governments, funding critical services such as education and emergency response. This revenue helps small towns and counties maintain and improve their facilities, from schools to courthouses. Our projects have allowed for investments in vital community institutions that previously lacked financial resources.

“If you drive around and you see the stuff like the courthouse, the school… we’re able to do these things because of a company like Avangrid coming in and being part of the community,” said Joe Dabulskis, Sherman County executive. “From internet to water systems to schools. Tons of things.”

Creating Jobs and Stability

One of the most immediate and tangible benefits of our projects is job creation. From construction to long-term operations and maintenance, we provide stable employment opportunities for local workers.

“Working at Avangrid has provided stability for me and my family. I no longer have to choose between saving money and paying for healthcare—I can do both,” said Gilbert Cooksey, an Avangrid wind technician in Oregon.

For many employees, these roles offer industry-leading competitive wages, healthcare, and long-term career stability. In regions where traditional industries have declined, our energy jobs serve as a reliable alternative, providing financial security and opportunities for career advancement. Workers in these communities have found that the stability of these jobs enables them to provide for their families without choosing between essential expenses.

Investing in Communities

In some communities, our energy projects have generated the tax revenue necessary to fund initiatives that were previously financially inaccessible. These investments improve educational opportunities and enhance residents’ overall quality of life.

In Pontiac, Illinois, Avangrid’s partnership with the local school district led to the construction of a new high school gymnasium and a rec center.

“The partnerships that we have, such as the one we have with Avangrid, play such an important role in providing financial support for this district,” said John Kilgore, Superintendent of Pontiac High School. “If we’re going to have extracurricular activities and after school programs, sometimes that takes beyond the state funding. And having partnerships such as those with Avangrid, help us to build out and enhance the programs that we can offer.”

During emergencies, such as wildfires, we have stepped in to provide essential support, including water and fuel. Our commitment to local well-being extends beyond business operations, reinforcing our role as an engaged and responsible neighbor.

John Jenson, Fire Chief in Bickelton, Wash.

John Jenson, Bickelton Fire Chief, recalled the incident where wildfires were threatening thousands of acres of land, and Avangrid didn’t hesitate to offer assistance. “It’s a big threat and… can deplete our resources in a hurry. We had a situation down by the solar farm, we were burning nearly 2,500 acres an hour. Avangrid helped us out in a big way. We were running out of water. They got hold of me by phone and said ‘we’ve got water, we’ve got fuel. If you need to tear that gate down, do it and get that water. Avangrid helps provide for us.’”

“They’re not just here to invest in their own projects. They’re here to invest in communities as well in a number of ways,” said Richard Foster, Director of Economic Development in Klickitat County, Washington. “All together with the community, Avangrid has had a huge, huge impact. A willingness to engage local, rural folks.”

A Commitment to Long-Term Prosperity

Avangrid is not just a temporary presence in these communities—we are a long-term partner in their growth and prosperity. As part of the Iberdrola Group, one of the world’s largest energy companies, we continue to expand our investments, ensuring ongoing economic benefits for local governments and residents.

“At Avangrid, we are not just building new energy projects—we are investing in the long-term success of the communities where we operate. Our commitment goes beyond producing power; we create jobs, drive local economies, and provide critical tax revenue that strengthens infrastructure and public services. As a leader in energy innovation, we take pride in our role as a trusted partner, ensuring reliable and affordable energy solutions that support businesses and families across the country,” said Jorge Pedron, Chief Operating Officer, Onshore Renewables, Avangrid.
