Celebrating Pride Month: Meet José Marrero
During Pride Month in June, Avangrid is celebrating our LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies! Today, meet José Marrero, Supervisor of Technical Training for our Connecticut and Massachusetts companies.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background and your current role at Avangrid?
I have been with Avangrid for 11 years, starting as a customer electrician in the union. After eight years, I moved into management as a Standard Field Supervisor. For the past 2.5 years, I have been a Supervisor in Technical Training, leading a team that trains all UIL companies (United Illuminating, Southern Connecticut Gas, Connecticut Natural Gas, Berkshire Gas Company).
What’s a recent project or initiative you’ve been proud to be a part of?
The transition of all training records to Workday involves meticulous planning and execution to ensure seamless integration and accessibility. Additionally, the call center is constantly managing numerous projects, each requiring careful coordination and attention to detail. These efforts are further compounded by ongoing corporate-wide changes, which necessitate adaptability and continuous improvement across all departments. Plus managing all the trainers and their ongoing classes.
Why is being a member of the Avangrid Pride employee resource group important to you?
I have been here since day one when the group was started. I had also come out at that time to my family and friends. This group has shown me what a work family is all about. I can talk to any of the team and be encouraged to be the best I can be.
What does Pride Month mean to you, and how do you plan to celebrate?
PRIDE month holds immense significance for me as it represents visibility and acceptance. It is a reminder that we are here, and our love is just as valid. While every month is Pride month in my home, we specifically celebrate June as it marks the beginning of our visibility and the strength we find in unity.
What issues facing the LGBTQ+ community would you like to increase awareness of?
The fact that we are all equals no matter who you love.
Are there any resources you recommend for allies looking to support their LGBTQ+ colleagues?
There are numerous centers that can assist in awareness that are open not to just LGBTQ+ people, but too all.
What advice would you give to LGBTQ+ individuals who are navigating their careers?
Embrace your true self at every stage of your career. Authenticity is key, and no one should feel afraid to be who they are, no matter where they are in their professional journey.
