Celebrating Black History Month: Meet Jamelia Edwards

At Avangrid, equal opportunity in the workplace matters to us. We strive to build and sustain a diverse workforce with a rich mix of differences, inclusive workplaces where each of us feel valued and connected, and equitable opportunities to grow and develop – no matter where we work. As we celebrate Black History Month this month, we’re spotlighting employees who are members of the Avangrid African-American Council for Excellence (AAACE). Today, Meet Jamelia Edwards, a Field Customer Service Representative for Rochester Gas & Electric.

Tell us a little about your background and how you came to work here.

I am a native of Rochester, NY, with over two decades of experience in customer service. Throughout my career, I have developed a versatile skill set across various industries, including home security, banking, and IT support. This diverse background has equipped me with a unique perspective, enabling me to adapt and excel in different environments.

I am the founder of The Mission Hope, an organization dedicated to fostering positive and informational events for the community, making a tangible difference in the lives of many. Recently, I have been named the Community Outreach Director for Mission Fulfilled 2030, a groundbreaking non-profit in Rochester. Additionally, I am a proud member of AAACE at Avangrid.

As a single mother and caregiver to my mother, I am deeply committed to giving back to my community. I continuously strive to create meaningful connections and make positive impacts on the future.

What is a particular accomplishment in your career here at Avangrid that you’re proud of?

In 2024, in collaboration with RG&E, I sponsored citizen preparedness training for both internal and external customers, enhancing community resilience and safety. This initiative, supported by the Department of Homeland Security, the National Guard, and the Governor of New York State, was organized by The Mission Hope. Over the past four years, The Mission Hope has hosted several events at local churches and community centers around Rochester, uniting my passion and purpose. Additionally, I participated in over 20 outreach events, working alongside the Invigorating Rochester Initiative to foster strong connections and make a positive impact on our customers.

Who has had a significant influence on your life?

Throughout my journey, I’ve been deeply influenced by remarkable individuals. My most significant historical influence is Brother el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz. His advocacy for equality and commitment to uplifting marginalized communities have profoundly shaped my values. My mentor, Gerald Moore, founder of Mission Fulfilled 2030, inspires me with his dedication to empowering young Black boys in the STEAM and tech industries. Lastly, my mother, the most resilient woman I know, embodies strength and perseverance. These influences drive my commitment to making a positive impact in the world.

As we commemorate Black History Month, what is a moment in Black history that influenced or shaped your life or that particularly resonates with you?

The deaths of Emmett Till, George Floyd, and most recently, Robert Brooks have profoundly influenced my life and work. These tragic events resonate deeply with me, highlighting the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality.

What is a cherished food or tradition from your cultural background that you celebrate?

My love for soul food is deeply rooted in family traditions and the sense of community it fosters. Growing up, soul food was always at the heart of our gatherings, bringing everyone together around the table. The rich flavors and comforting dishes like macaroni and cheese , candied yams, fried chicken, and collard greens were more than just meals—they were expressions of love and care. These experiences instilled in me a deep appreciation for the cultural significance and the joy that soul food brings to our lives.

Lastly, what is one thing about you that most people don’t know?

I am an avid reader with a deep passion for government and politics. I enjoy staying informed about current events and engaging in discussions about policy and governance.
